Types of Fatigue & Lack of Energy

Each types of fatigue requires a tailored treatment plan, and at MHV Clinic, we create personalised strategies to address the specific form of fatigue affecting you.

Fatigue can take different forms, and understanding the type you’re experiencing is vital for effective treatment. At MHV Clinic, we categorise fatigue into three main types:

Physical Fatigue
Occurs when your muscles feel weak, and you cannot perform physical activities that were once easy. It is often caused by overexertion, lack of exercise, or an underlying medical condition.
Emotional Fatigue
Can develop due to prolonged stress, anxiety, or emotional turmoil. It often accompanies mental and physical exhaustion and contributes to feelings of burnout and detachment.
Mental Fatigue
Mental fatigue affects your cognitive abilities, leading to difficulties in concentration, memory, and decision-making. It is commonly associated with stress, sleep deprivation, and prolonged mental strain.

Is it fatigue, or something more?

Everyone feels tired sometimes. Fatigue is different: it lasts for weeks, does not lift with rest and gets in the way of work and daily life. It often goes with poor sleep, stress, or aches and tension in the neck, shoulders and back.

Check with your GP first if

  • You have been tired for more than a few weeks without a clear reason
  • You have lost weight without trying, or have night sweats
  • You feel low, anxious or hopeless most days
  • You are short of breath or have a racing heart

Where osteopathy fits in

Osteopathy does not treat the medical causes of fatigue, so a GP check comes first. Where tension, poor posture or aches are adding to how drained you feel, your osteopath can ease them and give you simple movement and posture habits that help you feel more comfortable through the day.
