what causes arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. The causes of arthritis vary and often depend on the type of arthritis a person has. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, each with different underlying causes.

Arthritis is a condition that affects joints, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. The causes depend on the type of arthritis, with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis being the most common.

Common Causes

  • Age & Wear-and-Tear – Over time, cartilage wears down, increasing the risk of developing osteoarthritis.
  • Genetics & Family History – A family history of arthritis raises the likelihood of experiencing symptoms.
  • Gender & Hormones – Arthritis is more common in women, especially rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Autoimmune Reactions – The immune system may mistakenly attack the joints, causing inflammation.
  • Injury & Joint Trauma – Past injuries can lead to arthritis later in life.
  • Obesity & Joint Strain – Extra weight increases joint pressure, contributing to osteoarthritis.
  • Infections & Illnesses – Some infections trigger arthritis; blood tests help in diagnosis.

Risk factors you can change

Some causes of arthritis, such as age and family history, cannot be changed. Others can. Keeping to a healthy weight takes load off the knees and hips, staying active keeps joints moving and muscles strong, and looking after injuries early can lower the strain on a joint later on.

See a GP if

  • A joint is hot, red and swollen
  • Morning stiffness lasts more than half an hour
  • Several joints are painful at the same time
  • You feel generally unwell with your joint pain

How we can help

Osteopathy cannot reverse arthritis, but it can help with pain and stiffness. Your osteopath will gently work the joint and the muscles around it, and give you exercises that keep you moving and doing the things you enjoy.
